Revelin Bridge - Dubrovnik, Croatia
Dubrovnik is a centuries old medieval walled city often referred to as the “Pearl of the Adriatic”. Fortified over time, in the mid-15thcentury a detached fortress was constructed outside the eastern Ploce City Gate in response to the threat from the Ottoman Empire. In this image, the Revelin Fortress is on the left, with the Revelin Bridge leading over what was a moat to the inner Ploce Gate. Today the tranquil old port is a safe haven for local boat owners.
Old City Walls – Dubrovnik, Croatia
Dubrovnik is on a rocky peninsula in the southern coast of Croatia. Its towering stone walls and fortresses rise from the sparkling Adriatic Sea, protecting the city’s terra-cotta roofed homes from early invaders such as the Ottomans and the Venetians. The cylindrical Fort Bokar, at the left in this image, was added in the 15th century as the key point of defense for the western harbor and Pile City Gate.
Fort Lovrijenac – Dubrovnik, Croatia
Fort Lovrijenac (St. Lawrence Fortress) is located on a steep cliff outside the western city walls. Intended to prevent the sea invasion from the Venetians, it was so imposing that its 10 large cannons never had to fire a shot. Paired with the cylindrical Fort Bokar on the right, the old harbor and western Pile City Gate were well protected.

Evening on the Stradun – Dubrovnik, Croatia
Once a marshy channel, and later filled in to create the paved street that stretched from the Pile City Gate to the port, the Stradun is the busy main street in the old city of Dubrovnik. Now lined with shops and restaurants, and crowded with visitors at all times of day, the limestone paving has a polished appearance due to the millions of footsteps. The tower of 14th century Franciscan Monastery pierces the evening sky.

In addition to shops and restaurants on the Stradun, there are several important historical sites looking south from Luza Square. The Rector’s Palace (left) was the administrative center of the Dubrovnik Republic since the 15th century, where the elected Rector lived and worked for their one-month term. The Roman Catholic Dubrovnik Cathedral (center) was built in the late 17th century and is still active today.
Storm Over Korcula Old Town – Korcula, Croatia
On a tiny island peninsula along the coast of Croatia, Korcula is one of the best-preserved walled medieval old towns in the Adriatic, offering unspoiled landscapes and crowd-free cobbled streets rich in history and culture. The western harbor is visited by fishing boats, private yachts, and locals coming for a swim. One this day, a strong storm was building which would produce a waterspout that rolled past Korcula and up the opposing coastline.
