Chapel Rock – Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Michigan
Chapel rock, located along Lake Superior on the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan, is a remnant of Cambrian age sandstone carved by high water about 3800 years ago. The continual erosion which carved this sculpture also caused the collapse of the arch which had connected it to the shore, leaving a lone 250 year-old white pine attached to the mainland by its root system, to stand patrol over the rugged lakeshore.
Pictured Rocks Cliffs - Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Michigan
Colorful and bold, the Pictured Rocks Cliffs tower above the Northern shore of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, with the most colorful portion of the cliffs beginning east of Miners Beach. Stunning colors occur as mineral rich groundwater oozes out of cracks and decorates the face of the weather-sculpted sandstone. Offset against the glimmering blue-green water of Lake Superior, this makes a wonderful “picture”.
Painted Coves - Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Michigan
The vast sandstone walls and coves that encompass the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore are something to marvel. The Painted Coves near Mosquito Beach are ever changing works of art and were created from groundwater and springs rich with minerals such as iron, copper and lime that leak out of the cracks and trickle down its face. With these natural “brush-strokes”, the Painted Coves name is very appropriate.
